This is one of the greatest day to be a South African. Today would have been Miriam Makeba's 81st birthday and Google is honouring her with a doodle on their homepage, the first South African to receive such a feat.

A New Zealand advertising agency pranked a radio station (and by extension other DJs around the country who also claimed to be looking at the same prank to their listeners) into giving them 72 hours worth of free advertising in the run up to announcing a new season of the TV show, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, by having actors pretend to get up to all sorts of shenanigans in a house adjacent to their studio. Being a self-confessed cynic I wonder if anyone inside the studio was in on it, but you have to admit that it was a well devised plan that seems to have paid off.

I had no idea how bad the American TV news bulletins were this shoddy in their presentation. Everything is entertainment to them and should be accompanied by pop music. And it was the same when they reported the news that athlete Oscar Pistorius had shot and killed his girlfriend. I also caught myself laughing when they, presumably to justify to their viewers why they were reporting the incident, claimed that Oscar and Reeva Steenkamp were the Posh and Becks or the Brad and Angelina of South Africa.

You shouldn't really hate on Oprah but sometimes you have to, as I did the other day when I <strike>watched</strike> attempted to watch her interview with Beyonce. The whole thing is painful to watch and if, like me, you can't make it to the end, I can only refer you to my number one source of such matters, Gawker. They reliably inform me that the interview ended on a very upbeat note with Beyonce being annointed the preeminent mistress of the universe by the "O one".

It is patently unfair that men can prevent the rewards of unwanted fatherhood by presuming that their judgement is more valid than the judgement of the General Assembly while women's ability to decide is constantly up for debate through out the United States". No this is not a joke but rather the words of an elected member of the US House of Representatives from Georgia. She thinks it's far too easy for men to opt out of fatherhood and wants the state to step in by making it more difficult, because "women don't have it as easy". I'm just glad I've found a black crazy person in the US government system because everytime I laugh at Todd Akin or Sarah Palin or Michelle Backmann, part of me wonders how I'd defend myself against accusations of racism.

One of many advantages of being of pensionable age is the ability to do pretty much anything you like without fear of reprisal. I guess this is what this old man was counting on when he punched a TV reporter who dared step into his business property uninvited. Nobody wants to see violence directed at anyone not least journalists but a lot of what passes for journalism these days is utter rubbish and, I'm sorry to say, I laughed when this old man punched this reporter. The old man sounds like he's legally savvy and will probably come out of this alright but since I can't punch people who upset me I can only root for this guy and wish I could do the same.

When slain ex-LAPD cop Christopher Doner was still on the run Charlie Sheen couldn't resist seizing the opportunity to attach his name to the story of the day and made a video appeal to the man who was on the run to get in touch with him because he had mentioned him in his manifesto. As we now know, he didn't get in touch but Charlie Sheen got what he wanted, publicity.

I have nothing to say about this except to say that people who go on carnival cruises deserve everything they get (or don't get). These poor sods went through quite an ordeal last week and here a report of their travails.

You have to give it to Oprah. She overcame what sounds like a less than ideal childhood to become one of the wealthiest women in the world - presiding over a multi-billion dollar operation for a quarter of a century - with no discernible talent or skill.

Housewives of American (and later the world) could not get enough of her. Hollywood stars loved her, or the audience she used to command. Those were the good old days when only three channels were still competing for eyeballs. But when cable and the internet ate into her gigantic audience she knew it was time to go. She could have retired gracefully five years ago when her contract came to and end but I guess the
adulation of the TV viewers is a difficult drug to give up.

But her own cable channel is hemorrhaging money like there's no tomorrow and the only time anyone under the age of 50 watches it is when a misbehaving celebrity comes in to grovel to auntie Oprah so that she can forgive them on our behalf. It's also useful to those who have attained fame and fortune and just can't wait to tell the rest of the world how happy and content they are. In short, The Oprah Winfrey Show is nothing more than a joke that we watch now. A joke that's being played by the host on her audience. I can't help but imagine her having a little chuckle when she goes home.

This weekend Beyonce braced the Oprah show to be receive her Oprah seal of approval and the "Oprahisims" abound. In the fifteen minutes I could stomach, she pronounced Beyonce "the preeminent Mistress of the world", described her performance at the Super Bowl as the manifestation of "art meeting God".

I had to bail when she declared where mistress Beyonce's allure really lies, the crux of the tension between hot and cool, according to Queen Oprah. It's beyond creepy and had she been slightly conservatively dressed, it could quite easily have passed for a "nun hitting on a choir girl" sketch on SNL. Oprah is perpetrating a giant Kaufman-esque prank on us and she's only getting away with it because we all think she lacks self awareness.

One of the perils of a living in a democratic country, whatever that means, is that you elected representatives report to you on the progress in executing their duties and any major decisions they might have made. So when Barack Obama secured his fiscal cliff deal a few weeks ago he used his weekly address to explain its
benefits to his "fans".

It's okay for youtube users but the audio of the video also gets served as podcast. I happen to know a lot about podcasts having produced a lot of them coming on five years now. They are not as widespread as people who make them would like you to believe, and its their fault. The computer didn't take off until its makers made it simple and intuitive. Even radio people would just bark "download our podcast" without actually telling their listeners how to get it and where.

Barack Obama's appears to be made for the Madison Avenue and the Silicon Valley crowd because you can't just stream it from the site; you have to copy the RSS feed and paste into to your reader if you're not an iTunes user - which perpetuates the assumption that you have to have an iProduct to download a podcast. I know a lot of educated, intelligent, well to do people who are flummoxed by podcasts and I'd argue it's because of poorly delivered podcasts.

The Guardian is one of very few outlets who understand that a podcast is not a mainstream product: they give you an opportunity to play the audio, subscribe to iTunes, download the mp3 into your hard drive and, if you know what it is, grab the feed for your reader. Non-geeks will be able to consume this product as well.

So if you want to produce a podcast that even people with a rudimentary grasp of computers can consume, don't do what The White House does, do what the hippies at The Guardian do.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07430576491587301652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1106230881365119075.post-85763419970840271032013-01-12T14:38:00.000+00:002013-02-17T20:43:15.885+00:00Advice for wannabe musos by a man who doesn't careAdvice can be loosely described as an opinion on what can or should be done. You'd be surprised to learn that I wasn't around during cavemen days but I'd imagine advice was something you gave to your offspring when you deemed it necessary, solicited or not.

But now that we're civilised and hand our kids to other people to educate and prepare for adult life, advice has become something of an industry. There's no end of self-help books covering the everything from personal finance to how to breastfeed (I kid you not). A lot of people make a lot of
money dispensing advice and some of it is good but some is just exhibitionist hogwash.

But there are people who do it for the love of it and one such person is Bob Lefsetz, a music insider who pulls no punches when he writes his free letter. He doesn't answer to an editor or publicist and his advice is direct and uncensored. Although I have no desire to go into the music business, I read it because a lost of what he writes can be applied to other endeavours too.

In his most recent letter he delivers a dose of reality to people who are starting out and to get a wider audience. Read the rest of the letter here.

I kid you not.

I've been using VOIP phone numbers in three different continents for well over five years and the first time thought I'd get a South African number; just an incoming virtual number with voicemail capabilities. So headed over to mybroadband forums for pointers.

There's skypein and countless others that do it for a fee, which would set me back $60 a year, but I couldn't
justify the cost so I'm was in the market for a free incoming number but topupable if I wanted to make calls. Two companies seem to enjoy glowing reviews so I decided to sign up with both of them in an effort to compare both services. One didn't even bother to get back to me; and two e-mails and two months later, not a word. The other got back to me fairly promptly. But there was red tape to get through first. Admittedly, not though their doing. I had to e-mail them a certified copy of my ID document. I didn't have time to get that done and the number could wait. Two months later, I find myself with some time on my hands so I get it done and send it off. No I can't have the number; this time the reason: I failed the fraud check and I'm also out of the country. When I enquired as to what the "fraud check" entails and why my being out of the country would affect the usability of the number, I got this reply.

Fraud check? Have they somehow ascertained that I'm going to use the number to run a 419 type scam? Or do I actually not exist and am just a figment of my own imagination. I'll never know because they won't tell me what they mean. In the meantime, I've spoken to another provider and they promise to have me up and running within the next 24 hours. But I do wonder if this company I dealt with actually understands what they're selling.

And I think we can go ahead and add "you've failed the fraud check" to the same list that "computer says no" belongs to as shorthand for inept customer services people's inability to execute their duties.

Nor do I think she'll forget Lee Mckenzie's name or struggle to carry the show to an extent that David Coulthard will have to take over the interviews. But that was just another opportunity to have a giggle on Ortis Deley's expense.
We're from Barcelona is a band from Jönköping Sweden. I came across them about 5 years ago when I was cruising the net for "happy" music.

We're from Barcelona is from their debut album Let me introduce you to my friends and is dedicated to a Fawlty Towers character, Manuel. It still lifts me up when I'm down and it's this week's The Great Thursday Tune.

What's not to like about Kerry Leatham. She's beautiful, talented and loves her music. I first became aware of her when I was looking around for covers to feature on the then radio covers feature.

She and her "label mate", Peter Lyons, were covering Womack and Womack's Teardrops and that's no
mean feat. As it happens, I couldn't feature them at the time because they're signed to a record label and the feature was strictly for unsigned artists. But that didn't stop me from enjoying her music which she writes and performs with incredible regularity. Her music has been featured in movies and TV shows too.
There's no reason this shouldn't be this week's Great Thursday Tune.

I had coffee with a former colleague of mine the other day. I hadn't seen him since our last day at the now defunct radio station that used to air his show for which I was a producer. Music dominated our conversation, particularly Fleetwood Mac.

Lindsey Buckingham cancelled an interview with us at the eleventh hour when they were in London in 2009,
because their show had sold out and "why the fuck would he go to some dingy radio studio when the job is done anyway". That did not diminish our admiration of the man and but inspired me to coin a new bit: the shortest interview in the business. We pretty much sing from the same him sheet on everything when it comes to The Mac from our affection for Stevie Nicks to Rumours being the best album of theirs, even though it was released before we were born.

But that where the chorus of agreement ends. He thinks the best track in the album is Dreams and I think it's Go Your Own Way. Having listened to it a couple of times since said conversation and this being my website, Go Your Own Way wins. And the way Stevie and Lindsey look at each other everytime they perform it live is priceless.

It's on days like these that I wish I had honoured my true calling: being an English teacher. I say it's my true calling because for as long as I can remember I've been annoying people around me by correcting their grammar and spelling.

When my New York Times RSS feed delivered it's latest offer to my desktop a few days ago, I couldn't help but notice the irony in the first paragraph of a feature where they interview globe-trotting business people about their travels. The gentleman they were talking to boasts that he's flown to the United Kingdom a staggering 27 times in 18 months to talk to clients who use his ......... virtual meeting technologies.

So if I was explaining irony to schoolkids, I'd just show them this paragraph and the accurate use of the word would improve significantly around the world.

If you want to read the rest of this irony click hereUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1106230881365119075.post-7329360520630887072012-12-04T22:30:00.000+00:002012-12-05T01:23:37.870+00:00Remember not to get rich in the USA

If wanted fugitive, John McAfee's blog is anything to go by, living in a lawless, gun-toting South American banana republic is far more preferable than living in his native USA.

It's not because the USA is a bigger a lawless, gun-toting country itself, no matter what Fox News says; Mr
McAfee turned his back on a relatively stable, free and safe country and moved to the middle of nowhere so he could save a few millions in tax. Now he's on the run from the law for a murder of his neighbour, which he denies. He doesn't want to go to the police nor his embassy because he believes he'll be detained without trial.

And here's the clincher: he's still hopeful that the situation will be resolved and he'll be able to stay in the country. USA, you've got to take a good look at yourself. A billionaire who made his money in your country would rather risk being thrown in a South American prison than stay in your country, which is not a warzone by any stretch.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07430576491587301652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1106230881365119075.post-19643457195168768652012-11-29T17:06:00.000+00:002012-12-06T18:36:38.248+00:00The Great Thursday Tune: Michael Jackson - Human Nature
You don't need a reason to listen to something that was recorded by Michael Jackson. But if insist on the reason, how about the 30th anniversary of one of the most iconic albums in the history of music, Thriller?

One of the greatest inventions to come with Spotify and such services is the "music discovery" function that analyses your taste and suggests artists that it's algorithm thinks you'll gravitate towards. Some of the music it
throws up is new and some has been around for a while.

This week it gave me Tracy Chapman's Fast Car and I found myself listening to her self entitled debut album Tracy Chapman for hours immediately subsequently. This is one of the most powerful album of the 80s and somehow I think she never matched the dizzy heights it achieved with her later work. I think there's a good reason for that: when people get to write and record their first album they're usually in their 20s and have as many years worth of experiences and feelings to draw from. They are then expected to deliver a better album a 2 - 3 years later and more often than not, their efforts fall short.

But that heavens we live in the age of recorded and freely available music and we can listen to our hears' content.

According to Ms Chapman's website, she last toured in 2008 and I hope she does again soon.

Techcentral reports this morning that MTN is to throttle Blackberry Internet Service users. The company claims that they're doing it to "make sure that users have an improved and always-on internet experience". Yeah right! Nothing to do with wanting to make more money then?

So if you're wed to MTN and have a Blackberry, say goodbye to everything that makes smartphones smart.
Here's the summary:

"In effect, the company is throttling or blocking certain types of data. This includes streaming, downloading of files, watching videos on YouTube or using voice-over-Internet protocol services like Skype, which MTN says “are not meant to done on the BlackBerry network”."

So, in short, MTN would rather you used your blackberry to check if your high school girlfriend got fat on Facebook, stalk celebrities on Twitter and send and receive text messages.

Apple are throwing their weight around again. If you have itunes or any of their software but don't use their hardware, they don't care about you. Their travails since they unveiled latest iOS are well documented. The most notable for one for me is the podcast glitch.

The podcasts I produce have not updated on iTunes since Thursday and it being the weekend, I don't have to deal with it until tomorrow. But some of the podcasts I listen to did not download and synch to my ipod.

Not much of a problem for me as I'm not wed to Apple so I just took the feeds and used Doubletwist. I was somewhat heartened to learn that users of the much loved Apple Podcasts App were also having problems. More so when the "genius" told them that they problems can be solved just by purchasing more data.

So they'll charge you an arm and a leg for a piece of hardware that gets assembled very inexpensively in Asia, invest in an expensive marketing campaign convincing you that you need it but when their products malfunctions because of their incompetence, it's your fault and you should pay more to address it.

Again Apple fanboys I ask, why?

When it comes to covers I'm of the opinion that some songs should never be covered. Sometimes the original recording artist does such a good job and you give that song an identity you want to hang on to forever.

Radiohead belongs to that group whose work I've always believed needs no improvement or re-interpretation. Macy Gray released an entire album of just covers of songs she likes. Sublime, My Chemical Romance, Metallica and Eurythmics are among the artists she's dared to cover.

But I reserve the right to change my mind sometimes. And this is one of those times. I've listened to the album a couple of times over the past six months, I find myself hitting repeat repeatedly at the end of track two - Radiohead's Creep. She just owns it and reminds us of what she's capable of.

She's on a European tour until the new year.

You can pick up Macy Gray's album Covered hereAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07430576491587301652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1106230881365119075.post-23394136884718998702012-11-07T00:05:00.000+00:002012-11-07T00:05:48.031+00:00You can now trade gas for ass in New York

Hurricane Sandy has been very testing for New Yorkers. Thousands of homes are still without power and gas stations are running low and naturally, market forces have kicked in: the demand for gas far exceeds supply.

According to CBS New York, some crafty guys are taking advantage of the situation and have placed adverts for casual sex in exchange for gas on Craigslist. I think this is the entrepreneurial spirit Mitt Romney has been trumpeting for the past for year and would be very proud of this idea.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07430576491587301652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1106230881365119075.post-29818885264134119432012-11-01T00:06:00.000+00:002012-11-05T00:08:25.170+00:00The Great Thursday Tune: Dexys - Incapable of Love
It's a complete departure from anything they did before they did before. They've recruited a feisty young lady by the name of Madeleine Hyland and she features in two tracks - one of which is Incapable Of Love - but I think we should hear from her again in the very near future.

And it's this week's Great Thursday Tune.

Although he makes unremarkable and cheesy songs James Blunt appears to be a quality fellow. Not only did he single handedly prevent World War III but he's very good at handling the media circus that comes with being a pop star.

It was no different when the Mail on Sunday took a comment he made on the red carpet somewhere and blew it up as a huge announcement that he was quitting the music business. The world and his wife joined in with bad jokes about what a "beautiful" decision it was. Even geeks summoned the courage to vacate their mums' basement to let the world know that they too were cool, safe in the knowledge that a bigger pariah was currently being lampooned.

But instead of running to the publicist and drafting a statement to deny the news, Mr Blunt replied with a two sentence quip via his facebook page.

Well played captain.
I had not heard this tune in the last 5 years until it came through came through in my Spotify shuffle yesterday and I've been humming it ever since. I now believe I'm in love with this woman. No, I don't like her, I'm talking elope love, stay in bed all day listening to music kind of love. Rise is the title track of Gabrielle's third album with the same name released in 1999 and it peaked at number 1 in the UK and Irish singles chart.

Thanks to the internet, I'm now also in possession of some trivia: that the humm samples Bob Dylan's Knock knock on heavens door. Bob is notoriously difficult with allowing his songs to be sampled but apparently he loved Rise so much he let Gabrielle sample it for free.

According to her website, she's working on another album which will be released next year.
